In The Amazing "True" Story of a Teenage Single Mom, Katherine Arnoldi relates her own story of being a seventeen-year-old single, teenage mother. Her story is not unusual, but the fact that she has written and published it is. Written in the form of a graphic novel, this book captures the interest and heart of the reader. Kathi's story is real. She does not try to make it worse or better than it truly is, and the pictures clearly depict her joys and her sorrows, her struggles and her triumphs. Even the busy, single, teenage mom will be able to find time to read this story of turning the seemingly impossible into the possible.
Kathi's novel has been written for the purpose of inspiring young, single mothers. In this capacity, it is certain that is will be highly effective. For the single, teenage girl who has already become a mother, this story is a beacon of hope and inspiration to continue to dream and pursue those dreams. In the respect that it is a true story of overcoming obstacles and does makes a significant contribution to young adult literature in a specific area of concern for young adults, I would endorse its nomination for an award for literary excellence.
